ANPR gates for housing societies: a buyer's guide
ANPR is the most-requested gate upgrade and the one most often bought badly. This covers how it actually works, what the full installed cost looks like, where accuracy fails, and what to ask a vendor before signing.
ANPR uses a camera and recognition software to read a vehicle’s number plate at the gate and check it against a registered list, opening the barrier automatically for known vehicles. A residential installation typically needs a dedicated ANPR camera per lane, a boom barrier, a controller and network connectivity.
What is ANPR and how does it work at a gate?
Automatic Number Plate Recognition is a camera plus software that reads the characters on a number plate and returns them as text. At a gate, that text is checked against a list of registered vehicles; a match triggers the barrier, and anything else is passed to the guard as a decision to make.
The recognition itself is the part people focus on and the least interesting part of the deployment. What decides whether an installation works is everything around it: whether the camera is mounted at the right height and angle, whether there is enough light, whether the lane geometry gives the camera a square view of the plate, and what the system does when it is not confident.
That last point is the one to press a vendor on. A system that opens the barrier on a low-confidence read is worse than no system, because it admits vehicles nobody checked while giving the committee the impression that the lane is controlled. The correct behaviour on an uncertain read is to fall back to the guard.
- Recognition is the easy part. Mounting, lighting and lane geometry decide accuracy far more than the algorithm.
- The failure path matters most. An uncertain read must slow the gate down, never open it.
- It is a throughput solution. ANPR fixes queues at peak. It is not, by itself, an access-control policy.
What ANPR changes for a housing society
The immediate change residents notice is that they stop stopping. In a property where the morning peak produces a queue of six or eight cars, that is the difference between a daily irritation and a gate nobody thinks about. It is also, in practice, why ANPR gets approved at general body meetings.
The change that matters more is to the record. Vehicle numbers written by hand into a register are wrong often enough — transposed digits, unreadable handwriting — that the log cannot be searched. Read by camera, they are accurate enough that a question four months later has an answer, which is exactly when a vehicle log is needed.
The change committees do not anticipate is the data on their own property. Once every entry is recorded reliably, the number of vehicles genuinely operating from the property becomes visible, and it is usually well above what the parking allotment assumes. That is uncomfortable but it is the basis for any sensible parking policy.
The hardware you need
Three components plus network. Each has a cheap version that will disappoint you.
ANPR cameras
A purpose-built ANPR camera is not a general CCTV camera. It has a fixed focal length suited to the read distance, a global or fast shutter to freeze a moving plate, and infra-red illumination so it reads the retroreflective plate surface at night without depending on ambient light.
A general-purpose CCTV camera repurposed for ANPR is the single most common cause of a disappointing installation. It will read plates in good daylight and fail at night and in rain, which is when you most wanted it. Budget for the right camera per lane, and note that entry and exit are two lanes.
Boom barriers
Existing barriers can usually be retained if they accept a dry-contact or relay input, which most do. What matters is opening speed and duty cycle: a barrier rated for light use will fail early on a gate handling several hundred movements a day, and a slow barrier reintroduces the queue ANPR was bought to remove.
Safety interlocks are not optional. A loop detector or photocell that prevents the boom descending on a vehicle is a requirement, and any quotation that omits it is incomplete rather than cheap.
Controllers and network
A controller sits between the camera and the barrier and decides what happens. Where recognition runs on-device, it can continue admitting registered vehicles during an internet outage from a locally cached list; where recognition depends on a cloud service, an outage means falling back to manual operation. Ask which architecture you are buying, because the answer determines how the gate behaves on a bad day.
The network itself needs to be wired to the gate. A gate cabin on patchy Wi-Fi is a recurring fault that will be blamed on the software, and running the cable during installation costs a fraction of diagnosing it later.
What societies actually pay
A single-lane entry with a reusable barrier sits at the bottom of these ranges. A two-gate property with entry and exit lanes at each is four camera lanes, not one.

Privacy, consent and data retention
An ANPR system creates a continuous record of the movements of identifiable people — which vehicle, belonging to which flat, entered and left at what times. That is personal data, and a society operating such a system is handling it on behalf of its members. The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 is the governing framework in India; its provisions have been brought into force in stages and societies should take their own advice on current applicability rather than relying on a vendor’s assurance.
The practical obligations are not onerous and are worth adopting regardless of what is strictly compulsory. Tell members the system exists and what it records, before it goes live and not afterwards. Set a retention period by general body resolution — many societies land somewhere between six months and two years — and purge automatically rather than keeping everything indefinitely because storage is cheap.
Restrict who can query the logs, and log the queries. The realistic misuse of an ANPR system in a housing society is not an outside attacker; it is a committee member looking up when a particular resident comes and goes. Access control and an audit trail on reads are what prevent that, and they are also what let a committee demonstrate the system is not being abused.
- Tell members before go-live. What is recorded, why, who can see it, and for how long.
- Set retention by resolution. And purge automatically. Indefinite retention is a liability, not an asset.
- Restrict and log access. The realistic misuse is internal, and only an audit trail deters it.
- Take your own advice on the DPDP Act. Applicability and enforcement have been phased; do not rely on a vendor’s reading.
