Let the camera check the number plate, not the guard
The vehicle lane is where gate discipline usually breaks. A guard who has to identify a car, remember whether it belongs to the property, write the number in a register and raise the barrier will, under a queue of six cars at eight in the morning, stop doing at least two of those things. What gets dropped first is the record.
The result is a resident lane that is effectively unmonitored during exactly the hours when most vehicles move, and a visitor vehicle log with gaps in it. Neither is a discipline problem. It is a throughput problem: the check takes longer than the interval between cars, so the check gets skipped.
ANPR fixes the throughput rather than the discipline. A camera reads the plate in under a second, the system checks it against the registered vehicle list, and the barrier lifts for a resident without anyone doing anything. The guard’s attention goes to the vehicles that actually need a decision.
- Peak hours defeat manual checks. A morning queue is when the register stops being filled in, and when an unfamiliar car is most likely to pass unremarked.
- Residents resent the delay. A daily wait at your own gate is the complaint that ends most manual vehicle policies.
- Written plate numbers are unreliable. Transposed digits make a vehicle log unsearchable exactly when somebody needs to search it.

Auto boom barrier for registered vehicles
A plate that matches a registered vehicle with an active status opens the barrier. The entry is written against the vehicle, the flat it belongs to and the gate it came through, with the camera image retained alongside it.
Status matters as much as the match. A vehicle belonging to a flat that has been sold, or a tenant vehicle whose agreement ended, stops opening the barrier automatically — because the unit record changed, not because someone remembered to remove it from a list.
Visitor vehicle logging
An unrecognised plate does not fail; it routes to the visitor flow. The guard sees the plate already read and filled in, adds the flat being visited, and the resident approves as they would for any visitor. The plate is captured accurately even though the vehicle is unknown.
This is the part that quietly does the most work. Visitor vehicle numbers written by hand are wrong often enough to make the log useless; read by camera, they are reliable enough to search four months later.
Blacklisted vehicle alerts
A plate on the watchlist raises an alert to the guard before the barrier moves, and notifies the committee members on duty. The entry can be set to warn or to block, which are different policies for different reasons — a vehicle in a parking dispute warrants a warning, a vehicle involved in an incident may warrant a block.
Every watchlist entry carries who added it, when, and on what grounds, with an expiry. A list that can be edited silently becomes a way to settle personal disputes, which is why the audit trail is not optional.
Multi-gate and lane support
Properties with separate entry and exit gates, or separate resident and visitor lanes, are configured as distinct lanes with their own rules. A vehicle can be permitted at the residents’ gate and not the service gate; exit can be read to close the entry record and keep the on-property count honest.
Townships with several entrances get a single vehicle registry across all of them, so a car registered once works at every gate and a blacklist entry applies everywhere without being added six times.
Vehicle movement reports
Movement history is searchable by plate, by flat, by gate and by time window. The questions that actually get asked — which vehicles entered between midnight and 5am, has this plate been here before, how many vehicles does flat C-1103 actually run — are queries.
Aggregate reports matter for parking policy. A society arguing about slot allotment usually finds the argument resolves faster once it can see how many vehicles are genuinely resident against how many are counted on paper.
